2011 Amnesty Media Award-winning story on the militia’s child soldiers
Far removed from the Kenya of beach resorts and safaris, the Dadaab refugee camps on the country’s border with Somalia are home to 300,000 people displaced by its volatile neighbour’s civil war. For Islamic terrorist group al-Shabaab, the camp’s children are easy targets for recruitment. Is this supposedly safe haven the breeding ground for the next generation of global jihadis? Ed Caesar heads to East Africa to investigate.
This for me was an amazing project to photograph, and always is when shooting in Africa you have everything, amazing light & diversity, capturing the warmth but fear in these people due to their circumstance, was a humbling experience, and one I will always respect & remember.
